Pablo Picasso Les Demoiselles d AvignonLes Demoiselles d'Avignon. Pablo Ruiz Picasso, 1907. Oil on canvas, 8' x 7' 8". Created in France.

This exceptional painting is considered a cornerstone of modern art. Regarded as a transitional work, it was created in between periods (Picasso’s Rose Period and his African-influenced Period) and the ideas behind Les Demoiselles lead directly into Picasso’s creation of cubism.
Picasso worked diligently creating well over 100 sketches for the work, each figure drawn differently. It depicts five prostitutes in a brothel in Barcelona and considered from left to right, one can see Picasso’s transition into a new art movement. In Les Demoiselles, Picasso links his classical past with his future – the creation of cubism. Georges Braque, cubism’s co-creator, felt shocked upon viewing the work “as if someone was drinking gasoline and spitting fire” and believed Picasso to have started a revolution in art, the likes of which had never been seen before.
